Barolo Monprivato 2018

Barolo is among the most important wine locations on our beautiful planet, some villages are more important than others, and then there are MGA's that have been considered great throughout history. Monprivato in Castiglione Falletto is one of those great Barolo vineyards.

Monprivato is of further significance, since it is a monopole [a vineyard which is under the complete control of a single winery]. Disclaimer: It is true that Giovanni Sordo has issued a Monprivato label since 2013, but this effort is widely seen as an unsuccessful attempt to piggyback on the Mascarello family’s work with this extraordinary vineyard site.

There is a further explanation as to why Barolo Monprivato stands out as one of the most important testaments to Barolo. The Giuseppe Mascarello family has had the prescience for at least three generations of understanding the immense value of this soil.

Mauro Mascarello and his son Giuseppe’s wine signature lends great elegance to all their labels. Monprivato stands out in every vintage as extremely elegant, comparable to high class Côte d’Or, always with a light Nebbiolo hue, not a slender body yet not more than the necessary, simply the consummate gentleman. Regardless to say, the tannin filigree is of utmost distinction without a trace of vulgarity. Monprivato has extraordinary bottle ageing potential and while it opens up slowly over the years, this is not due to any trickery of over-sulphuring. Nebbiolo from blue marl is considered introverted. Please do not be fooled, its sophisticated demeanour will be revealed to those who wait.
