Summer Wolff

Summer is an unusual new candidate, being the wife of Fabrizio Iuli. Summer has imported wines to the USA for many years and works with many special producers. Based out of Montaldo Cerrina, Summer is nose-deep in all matters wine.

During my last visit in September, I was excited to try Summer’s rendition of a macerated Baratuciat. It works! The grape variety carries itself above the larger structure of the wine with a wonderful freshness to it.

Freisa is a favourite of Summer, and of mine. As a lesser cousin of Nebbiolo with less refined tannins, Freisa ranges from the traditional slightly frizzante style which sometimes remains off-dry, to lighter interpretations of the grape’s potential. I suspect that both forms are trying to escape the challenge that the variety poses. Summer has created a light yet elegant Freisa, what a joy! While I suspect that Fabrizio has played his hand in the production, I am excited for Summer and for all of us to have these wines. I often underline that labels are unimportant in lieu of the contents, but I do find the Giogio and Ettore labels beautiful!
